How to Choose the Right Life Science Marketing Agency (Without Another Top 10 List)

It’s 2026. If you’re shopping for a scientific marketing agency, you’ve probably asked AI something like this: “What are the best biotech-focused agencies?”

Unfortunately for you, AI will generate most of its response from “best biotech marketing agencies” listicles written by the agencies themselves: making a list of top companies and including your own is a shockingly effective strategy for being mentioned by AI… because robots like to be told what to do.

Well, here’s an honest synopsis written by an actual living human. I’m the VP of Samba Scientific and a molecular biologist by training. At the risk of directing you to choose one of our competitors, I’m going to outline what I understand to be the strengths and weaknesses of the most well-known life science marketing agencies (including our own).

It might seem crazy, but my goal is to help marketing decision-makers in the life science industry choose the right agency, before submitting an RFP, because—let’s be honest—none of us want to spend time creating or reviewing a proposal that’s a bad fit.

Alright, I’m about to get really vulnerable, so please, take a second to appreciate the honesty, and forgive me the liberty of starting with our strengths.

Samba Scientific

Samba Scientific is focused on driving awareness and lead generation for companies that sell products and services to biologists.  We are unique in that each of our clients is paired with a PhD-level Account Manager and a scientifically trained Project Manager who meet with you weekly, direct your strategy, and oversee your entire marketing program. All of the agencies I’ll mention have scientifically trained strategists and/or content writers. But the level of training (bachelor’s degree vs real lab/industry experience) varies, and the level of access clients get to those experts varies widely. To our knowledge, we are the only full-service agency that makes PhD-level strategists the primary client-facing lead on every account.

Why does this matter? Real scientists get up to speed faster, have a deeper understanding of how to use your product/service, and they can self-educate on your technology (saving you time). They can personally identify with the pain points of your audience and build compelling campaigns that speak to your end-users in a meaningful way.

Samba has a relatively small team of around 20 FTEs, which means we can be a bit more agile than many larger agencies. We deliver assets in days or weeks, not months. That speed of execution means that we can start delivering results in as little 4-6 weeks. Between the agility of our production team, the designated scientific account and project managers, and our commitment to going “all-in” on client success, we operate as a true partner and seamless extension of our clients’ own marketing teams.

The visual below provides a quick comparison of Samba Scientific’s services versus our competitors (based on our understanding from their websites). Our greatest strengths in terms of depth of offering and demonstrated excellence are in branding, messaging, scientific design, websites, and digital campaigns.

Supreme Optimization > Supreme Group

Supreme is the obvious choice for an opener because they’re huge. They were large to begin with, and then they went around gobbling up at least 10 other agencies in the US and Europe (including BioStrata and Clarity Quest, which were also quite large on their own).  We expect them to continue to make more acquisitions and focus on multinational big pharma and healthcare companies as time goes on.

We’ve actually worked directly with Supreme on client projects a few times, too.

Example 1: For a bioinformatics analysis company, we developed updated branding, messaging, and web copy, which Supreme then finalized into a fully designed and developed website.

Example 2: For a biospecimen company, Supreme managed their ads, and we optimized their ad landing pages.

From observing the Supreme team directly on client calls, and from the feedback I’ve gotten from these and prospective clients, this is what I understand about working with Supreme Optimization:

Supreme Optimization is a big, well-oiled machine. They are extremely organized when it comes to large website projects, SEO/GEO, and PPC management. They clearly define their processes, stick to them, and hold scope in check. (At least that was the case pre-agglomeration.)

Because they are large and structured, Supreme Optimization is not exceptionally fast or nimble; these website projects can take a year or more. Clients who have worked with both Supreme and Samba have stated that Samba Scientific is more hands-on, fast, flexible, and proactive. While Supreme is good at getting a well-defined, big job done, Samba will help you define the job based on your company’s goals and needs — and then dynamically adjust it depending on what the data tells us.

CG Life

CG Life is one of the older and larger life science marketing organizations in the US. Recently, they’ve repositioned themselves to focus on rare disease. CG Life is more heavily focused on reaching patients and providers, while Samba’s most common target audience is scientists and decision makers in pharma/CROs, academic medical centers, and diagnostic labs. Accordingly, CG Life’s scientific knowledge is broad, while Samba’s is deep. For instance, Pharma Account Directors at CG Life are required to have pharma agency experience and a degree in marketing/communication. Samba Scientific Account Managers are required to have advanced degrees in science and hands-on lab experience.

Clarity Quest

Like CG Life, Clarity Quest is very healthcare focused. Much of their history is in software and medical devices. While both Samba Scientific and Clarity Quest could comfortably serve the same suite of clients, Samba’s experience and expertise is more preclinical, B2B, and scientist-to-scientist. Clarity Quest’s experience seems to be more concentrated in Healthcare IT.

The Linus Group

Our neighbors in Boulder, Linus Group, are very focused on strategy. While Samba excels at helping you connect with your ideal target customer, The Linus Group excels at defining them and crafting winning positioning statements. They are one of the leaders in terms of market research and unmet needs analysis. They’re a boutique firm, and while they’ve been doing it for a long time, their service stack stops at defining the campaign, whereas Samba’s focuses on ongoing execution. If you need market insights and campaign ideas, but you have a team that can execute, Linus might be a good fit for you.

Forma Life Science Marketing

These guys are the OG life science marketing agency. Their CEO literally wrote the book on it (“Making the Complex Compelling” is a required training material at Samba). Forma also sits a bit upstream of Samba (market intelligence, market research, etc.). While they are also equipped to handle execution, their process emphasizes research and discovery. Samba’s approach is more agile: build a strong foundation, while also delivering quick commercial wins.

SCORR Marketing

SCORR Marketing is similar to Samba Scientific in terms of overall offerings, but Samba places greater emphasis on digital marketing and conversion. Our websites are purpose-built to generate leads, with SEO/GEO, conversion optimization, and digital campaigns integrated from the outset. SCORR takes a more integrated marketing and communications approach, with particularly established capabilities in PR, media relations, and communications. Additionally, while SCORR takes a broad stakeholder approach spanning research through commercialization, Samba specializes in reaching the technical B2B audiences at the heart of life science purchasing decisions.

Digital Elevator

Digital Elevator and Samba Scientific are similarly-sized inbound-focused agencies. Samba is a bit more full-service (we offer tradeshow logistics and design and full strategy and execution for inbound campaigns). Samba Scientific is also much more specialized in B2B life science research, preclinical, and early-stage clinical, while Digital Elevator’s broader client list includes local health and wellness practices as well as home services.

Biostrata

Biostrata is very similar to Samba Scientific in that they are both heavily science-focused, full-service agencies. We also cover very similar industries (research tools, diagnostics, biotech, CROs/CDMOs). Samba focuses more on digital strategy and execution, while Biostrata has more longstanding experience in PR, thought leadership, and market research. Biostrata is also 3-4 times larger and part of the Supreme Group acquisition.

Looking Forward

In a digital world, any marketing agency worth their salt is constantly evolving. Two years ago, nobody was talking about AI search visibility, and now GEO/AEO-focused offerings are a core service for agencies like Samba Scientific, Digital Elevator, and Supreme Optimization. Similarly, Samba Scientific and other agencies are starting to offer AI-as-a-service (AI consulting, creation of agentified workflows, or even software development).

As more and more content is AI generated, an authentic, independently-verified brand presence is going to become more important. That’s why we expanded our offering to include PR services last year. Although our PR service offerings are green, we’ve already seen excellent returns in the omics space (see an example), a niche we know much more intimately than any of our competitors.

What does it mean to be a “life science marketing agency?”

The category of “science” is exceptionally broad. “Life science” is only slightly more narrow. In reality, all science marketing companies have a particular niche they excel at. That niche reflects both their technical knowledge and their industry and audience experience.

Samba Scientific excels at selling complex scientific technologies to technical buyers. Our scientists have expertise in molecular biology, neurology, immunology, and biochemistry. Our experience is concentrated in genomics and omics technologies, laboratory automation, high-throughput screening, AI-enabled discovery, molecular diagnostics, digital pathology, CROs, CDMOs, and, generally, preclinical technologies. We have also been extremely successful in helping early-stage therapeutic companies communicate their value to investors and potential licensing partners.

The audiences/job titles we’ve helped those clients reach are primarily principal investigators, scientists, laboratory directors, core facility/AMC directors, research associates, translational researchers, biotech R&D teams, pharmaceutical discovery teams, and scientific procurement groups. We have, admittedly less experience targeting patients and physicians; however, our efforts on that front have been very successful (see an example). As a former science journalist with over a decade of experience in science communication, I would argue that scientists themselves are the most niche and discriminating audience in the space.

The graphic below provides a visual breakdown of the life science spaces where each of the leading marketing agencies typically play.

Conclusion

After spending years working alongside—and occasionally along with our competitors—I don’t believe there’s a single “best” life science marketing agency. The best choice depends on your science, your audience, and where you are in your commercialization journey. If this guide saves even one marketing team from issuing an RFP to agencies that aren’t the right fit, then it’s done its job. And if Samba happens to be one of the agencies you consider, we’ll happily tell you if we’re not the best fit. We’d rather earn a long-term relationship than win the wrong project.

FAQs

For growing B2B life science companies that have a well-defined offering, a technical audience, and a desire to uplevel their brand and differentiate themselves while also generating measurable results (generally in the form of qualified leads), Samba Scientific is the obvious choice.

We have extremely deep and broad experience serving companies in the omics space, including: sequencing and library preparation kits and instruments, sequencing services, bioinformatic analysis software and services (including genomic diagnostics), proteomics, single cell sequencing, immune sequencing, multi-omic spatial platforms, panels and reagents for spatial proteomics and transcriptomics, and AI-driven spatial analysis.

In terms of target audience, much of our experience has involved reaching decision makers in pharma who are anxious to derisk and speed up their pipelines through biomarker discovery and analysis. To this effect, beyond omics, we have also effectively positioned technologies and services in high-throughput live cell screening, toxicology (in vitro models/new advanced methodologies, organoids, biospecimens, transgenic animal models, and custom cell lines), AI/ML-based target and biomarker discovery, antibody discovery and efficacy testing, liquid biopsy/MRD-analysis, cell and gene therapy testing (CRISPR on/off target analysis, CAR-T/TIL selection and potency testing), histopathology and digital pathology, and neurobiomarker discovery and testing.

A life science marketing agency specializes in helping companies in biotechnology, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, research tools, CROs, CDMOs, laboratory automation, and related scientific industries grow their business. Unlike a general marketing agency, a life science agency combines marketing expertise with scientific knowledge to accurately communicate complex technologies, understand technical buying journeys, and create marketing that resonates with scientific audiences.

General B2B agencies are experts in marketing tactics, but they often lack the scientific background needed to understand complex technologies and highly technical buyers. A life science marketing agency understands the language of science, can work directly with subject matter experts, and knows how scientists evaluate products and services. That results in more accurate messaging, faster onboarding, and marketing that builds credibility instead of oversimplifying the science.

Scientific expertise helps marketers ask better questions, understand complex technologies faster, and translate technical concepts into compelling stories without sacrificing accuracy. It also reduces the amount of time your internal team spends explaining the science and reviewing drafts, allowing projects to move more quickly while maintaining technical credibility.

Yes, but there is often a longer learning curve. General agencies may excel at branding, advertising, or digital marketing, but they typically need significant support from internal scientists to understand the products, competitive landscape, and customer journey. For highly technical products or services, a specialized life science agency can often become productive much faster.

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they can describe different areas of focus. Biotech marketing agencies tend to work primarily with therapeutic companies and biotechnology platforms, while life science marketing agencies may also specialize in research tools, diagnostics, genomics, laboratory automation, CROs, CDMOs, instrumentation, and scientific software. The best agency for your company depends on your technology, customers, and commercialization stage.

Start by defining what you need most. Are you looking for market research, branding, a new website, lead generation, PR, or commercialization strategy? Then evaluate agencies based on four key factors: their scientific expertise, experience in your specific market, strengths in the services you need, and whether their size and working style match your organization. If you don’t know exactly what you need, then look for an agency like Samba Scientific that emphasizes strategic partnerships.

Most life science marketing agencies offer some combination of branding, messaging, website design and development, SEO, paid advertising, scientific content creation, marketing automation, conference support, public relations, and digital campaigns. Some agencies also provide market research, commercialization strategy, or investor communications.

It depends on your needs. If you’re looking for one partner to develop strategy and execute across multiple channels, a full-service agency can provide consistency and simplify project management. If you have a very specific need—such as public relations, market research, or investor communications—a specialist agency may be a better fit.

Absolutely. “Life sciences” encompasses everything from genomics and diagnostics to therapeutics, medical devices, hospital equipment, and healthcare IT. An agency with experience in your scientific discipline will understand your customers, competitive landscape, terminology, regulatory considerations, and buying process, allowing them to produce stronger work with less ramp-up time.

Scientists are trained to evaluate evidence, question claims, and compare data before making decisions. They expect marketing to be technically accurate, supported by evidence, and relevant to their workflows. Successful life science marketing educates first and sells second, building trust through expertise rather than hype.

An agency that employs scientists can often communicate directly with your technical team without requiring extensive translation or supervision. Scientists are better equipped to interview subject matter experts, understand complex technologies, identify meaningful differentiators, and create technically accurate content that resonates with scientific buyers.

Specialized agencies are particularly valuable for companies selling complex technologies to technical buyers. This includes research tools, laboratory instrumentation, genomics, molecular diagnostics, laboratory automation, scientific software, AI-enabled drug discovery platforms, CROs, CDMOs, and early-stage biotechnology companies.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are strategies designed to increase your visibility in AI-powered search experiences such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and other answer engines. Rather than focusing only on traditional search rankings, these strategies help your content become a trusted source that AI systems reference when answering user questions.

An RFP is most effective after you’ve clearly defined your business goals, budget, timeline, internal resources, and success metrics. The more specific you are about your objectives, the easier it will be for agencies to determine whether they’re the right fit—and to propose solutions that align with your needs. Well-executed RFPs enable comparison of short-listed agencies across consistent, well-defined parameters/metrics. If your internal marketing team lacks the sophistication to clearly define, benchmark, and analyze those metrics that are most important to your commercial goals, then an RFP may not be the right avenue. Instead, look for an agency that provides free strategic consultation to help you define the plan.

The timeline depends on the tactics being used. Paid advertising and website optimization can generate measurable improvements within weeks, while SEO, content marketing, and thought leadership typically take several months to build momentum. The best marketing strategies combine quick wins with long-term investments that continue to generate value over time.
